[Adapted text of letter sent to parents on 12th August 2020]

Saint Fiachra’s National Schools

August 12th  2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope you are all keeping well and are looking forward to the return to school on 31st August. Preparations are continuing at a pace to have the school ready to receive the boys and girls for the first time since March. We know that the children who are transferring from the Junior to Senior school are a very excited about going to the senior school and we appreciate that they will be a little apprehensive too. The purpose of this letter is to let you know about the arrangements for First Holy Communion.

We are delighted to be able to finally announce the arrangements for the boys and girls who will be receiving the sacrament this year.  We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding to date and are fully aware of how disappointed the children were in May. The pandemic has severely hampered all of our lives and will continue to do so for some considerable time. The new arrangements listed below are dependent on the situation remaining as stable as it is at the moment here in Dublin, so hopefully, we will be able to go ahead on these dates and in the format that we have organised.

As you are aware, current restrictions only allow 50 people in Beaumont church. Therefore, it will be necessary to hold the ceremonies elsewhere. The Parish of Donnycarney has kindly offered the use of their church to enable us to have the First Holy Communions.

There will however be certain restrictions relating to that church also.

• On the day of the ceremony, we can only accommodate one class making Holy Communion at a time. This means that there will be two First Holy Communion Masses per day.

• Numbers attending will still be restricted. Unfortunately, only the communicant and their parents can attend the Mass.

• The church will need to be sanitised after each ceremony.

Needless to say, we have to respect the parish programme of masses and weddings etc so after consultation with clergy in Donnycarney we have agreed the following dates and times to hold our ceremonies:

Friday September 11th 12 noon Rm 18 ( Ms. Raftery’s class)

Friday September 11th 2pm Rm 20 ( Ms. Buckley’s class)

Friday September 18th 12 noon Rm 19 (Ms. Kearin’s class)

Friday September 18th 2pm Rm 22 (Ms. Flanagan’s class)

Friday September 25th 12 Rm 12 (Ms. Ní Loinsigh’ class)

Friday September 25th 2pm Rm 21(Ms. Murphy’s class)

There are some twins in each of the classes and we will accommodate them in line with the family’s wishes.

Finally, we want to thank the teachers in the Junior School for all their work in preparing the children to date and to thank you all for your patience in this matter. We look forward to meeting you and have no doubt that the children will have an unforgettable experience on the big day.

Best wishes,

Kieran Creaner (Principal St. Fiachra’s Senior School), Áine Carberry (Principal St. Fiachra’s Junior School), Fr. Robert Smyth.
